The U.S. Justice Department has urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to halt the state's planned execution of a death row inmate, citing concerns over the use of a sedative that has not been approved by the FDA for this purpose. In a letter to Newsom, the department expressed worries about the potential for the drug to cause "severe pain and suffering" during the execution process. The letter also noted that the use of the sedative could violate the inmate's Eighth Amendment rights, which prohibit cruel and unusual punishment. Newsom has yet to respond to the Justice Department's request, but the state is scheduled to carry out the execution later this month.
