Ranked-choice voting could once again decide New York City's mayoral primary, four years after the process was slow and marred by a major tabulation error.
Ranked-choice voting (RCV) was implemented in New York City's 2025 mayoral election, allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference, a system designed to ensure the winner has majority support. In this method, if no candidate achieves a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed to the next preferred candidates until one achieves a majority. The adoption of RCV in New York City aims to encourage more positive campaigning and give voters greater choice, potentially leading to more representative outcomes. The system has been praised for reducing the spoiler effect and promoting a more diverse field of candidates, though it has faced criticism for being complex and potentially confusing to voters.
