Farmer and government rift remains, NFU leader says

A rift between farmers and the government still exists despite a spending review providing 2.7bn boost to agriculture, a farming leader has told BBC Politics East.

The rift between farmers and the government persists, as highlighted by Minette Batters, the president of the National Farmers' Union (NFU), in her speech at the NFU conference. Despite some progress, such as the government's decision to scrap a plan to reduce the number of livestock to meet climate targets, Batters emphasized that farmers are still facing significant challenges. These include the need for a core budget for farming, the impact of cheap imports, and the ongoing issue of bovine tuberculosis (TB). She called for a multi-year framework to support farmers and stressed the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the sustainability and profitability of the farming sector.
