YMCA, St. Timothy Church Partner for Summer Camp
Locales: Connecticut, UNITED STATES

WEST HARTFORD, CT - February 10th, 2026 - The West Hartford Plan and Zoning Commission (PZC) gave the green light Monday evening to a novel partnership between the YMCA and St. Timothy Church, approving a special exception permit that will allow the YMCA to operate a summer camp program for children ages 5-12 at the church's Benton Drive location. This decision marks a significant expansion of the YMCA's summer offerings and highlights a growing trend of community organizations collaborating to address childcare needs.
The YMCA, a cornerstone of West Hartford's community for decades, has experienced increasing demand for its summer programming in recent years. Traditional facilities have reached capacity, prompting a search for alternative locations. St. Timothy Church, with its spacious grounds and ample indoor facilities, proactively offered its resources to help meet this community need. This collaboration isn't simply a matter of logistical convenience; it represents a shared commitment to enriching the lives of West Hartford's children.
"We've seen a consistent rise in enrollment for our summer camps," explained YMCA Executive Director, James O'Connell, in a statement released today. "Families are increasingly reliant on these programs for safe, engaging, and enriching childcare during the summer months. St. Timothy Church's generosity and willingness to partner with us allows us to serve more children and broaden the scope of our programs."
The PZC's approval wasn't without its due diligence. During the public hearing preceding the vote, commission members and nearby residents voiced legitimate concerns regarding potential increases in traffic congestion and parking difficulties in the residential neighborhood surrounding St. Timothy Church. Residents rightfully questioned how the influx of parents and staff associated with the summer camp might impact the daily flow of traffic and available parking spaces.
The PZC responded by incorporating several crucial conditions into the approved permit. These conditions include a strict limit on the number of vehicles permitted on church property during peak drop-off and pick-up times. The YMCA is also required to implement a comprehensive traffic management plan, potentially utilizing staggered drop-off/pick-up schedules and designated parking zones. Crucially, the plan also mandates adequate supervision of children by YMCA staff during these critical periods to ensure their safety and to facilitate an orderly flow of traffic. Furthermore, the YMCA committed to actively encouraging carpooling and the use of alternative transportation methods, such as walking or biking, whenever feasible.
This partnership extends beyond simply utilizing space. Financial compensation will be provided to St. Timothy Church for the use of its facilities, helping to support the church's own community outreach programs and ongoing maintenance. This reciprocal benefit demonstrates a strong, mutually beneficial relationship. Reverend Eleanor Vance, the senior pastor at St. Timothy Church, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "We are delighted to welcome the YMCA and the children to our campus. It aligns perfectly with our mission to serve the West Hartford community, and we are pleased to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these young campers."
The success of this model could pave the way for similar collaborations in other West Hartford neighborhoods, and potentially, in surrounding towns. Addressing the growing need for affordable and quality childcare requires innovative solutions, and leveraging the resources of existing community institutions like churches, schools, and community centers is proving to be an effective strategy. The YMCA is already exploring possibilities for future partnerships.
Looking ahead, the YMCA plans to offer a diverse range of summer camp activities at the St. Timothy Church location, including traditional outdoor games, arts and crafts, nature exploration, and potentially, specialized programs focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The YMCA's spokesperson, Maria Diaz, reiterated the organization's excitement: "We're really looking forward to partnering with St. Timothy Church to provide this opportunity for the kids in West Hartford. It's a win-win for everyone involved." Registration for the summer camp program is slated to open on March 1st, and interested parents are encouraged to visit the YMCA of West Hartford's website for more information.
