  • An appeal that landed at the Supreme Court Tuesday could test the justices' emerging concern about President Donald Trump's aggressive deportation policies and whether he is willing to defy judicial orders.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled in a 6-3 decision that the Biden administration's policy to deport South Sudanese nationals, who were previously protected under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), is lawful. The decision overturns a lower court's ruling that had blocked the deportations, arguing that the administration failed to adequately consider the ongoing civil conflict and humanitarian crisis in South Sudan. Justice Amy Coney Barrett, writing for the majority, stated that the executive branch has broad discretion in immigration matters. The dissenting opinion, led by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, argued that the decision puts vulnerable individuals at risk by sending them back to a dangerous situation. This ruling impacts thousands of South Sudanese immigrants in the U.S., who now face potential deportation.
