About two-thirds of American adults say they have recently felt the need to limit media consumption about politics and government because of overload.

A recent study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism indicates that a significant number of Americans are turning away from news consumption due to feelings of mental exhaustion and information overload following the 2020 election. The survey, which included responses from over 2,000 U.S. adults, found that many are particularly avoiding news related to politics and the upcoming 2024 election, with respondents expressing fatigue from the constant coverage of political events and the divisive nature of the news. This trend of news avoidance is observed across the political spectrum, affecting viewers of major news networks like CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News, and is driven by a desire to protect mental health and reduce stress.
