Michel Barnier, the French prime minister, is expected to submit his resignation to Emmanuel Macron this morning after a vote of no-confidence against his government last night. Macron is due to address the nation this evening.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne is set to resign following a series of political challenges, including a loss in a no-confidence vote related to a controversial immigration bill. This bill, which aimed to expedite the deportation of foreigners deemed a threat and limit their access to social benefits, faced significant opposition and led to the resignation of Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau. President Emmanuel Macron, who has been dealing with a lack of an absolute majority in parliament since the 2022 elections, is expected to address the nation and announce a cabinet reshuffle. This reshuffle might see the appointment of a new prime minister, with speculation around figures like Education Minister Gabriel Attal or even a return of Édouard Philippe. The political instability comes at a time when France is also preparing for the upcoming European Parliament elections, adding pressure on Macron to stabilize his government.
