Merz tells US to stay out of German politics ahead of first Trump call

Friedrich Merz has told Washington to stay out of his country's domestic politics ahead of his first phone call with Donald Trump.
In a recent interview with the German newspaper Bild, Friedrich Merz, the leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), emphasized the importance of maintaining German sovereignty and warned against foreign interference in German domestic affairs. Merz specifically addressed the United States, urging them to "stay out of German domestic politics" amid ongoing discussions about the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project. He stressed that Germany should be free to make its own decisions regarding energy policy without external pressure. Merz's comments come at a time when tensions between the U.S. and Germany have been rising over the controversial pipeline, which aims to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany, bypassing Ukraine.
