AAP Blasts BJP Over Delhi Road Deaths

New Delhi, February 17th, 2026 - The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today intensified its criticism of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi, following the deaths of two motorcyclists in a recent traffic accident. AAP is framing the incident as a direct result of the BJP's failure to address systemic road safety issues, specifically highlighting a lack of action stemming from a similar, tragic event in Noida two years prior. The party alleges a pattern of negligence and prioritizing political expediency over public safety.

The latest accident, which occurred late Saturday evening on the Outer Ring Road near the Ghazipur landfill, involved two riders colliding with a stalled auto-rickshaw during peak evening traffic. While initial reports suggest speeding was a contributing factor, AAP insists the conditions leading to the high-speed chase and ultimate collision are indicative of broader infrastructural and enforcement failures.

"This wasn't simply an accident; it was a predictable consequence of a government that consistently fails to prioritize the safety of its citizens," stated AAP spokesperson Raghav Chadha during an emergency press conference held this morning. "We saw the same preventable factors at play in the Noida incident of 2024 - inadequate lighting, poorly maintained road surfaces, and a blatant disregard for traffic regulations. The BJP had ample opportunity to learn from that tragedy, to implement changes, and yet, here we are, mourning another senseless loss of life."

The 2024 Noida incident, which resulted in the deaths of three college students, involved a speeding car jumping a poorly marked median on the Noida Expressway. Investigations at the time revealed insufficient street lighting and a lack of regular maintenance contributed to the driver's inability to react in time. The subsequent public outcry led to promises of improved road infrastructure and stricter enforcement, promises AAP now claims were largely unfulfilled.

"The BJP commissioned reports, held meetings, and issued statements after the Noida tragedy," Chadha continued. "But talk is cheap. We haven't seen a corresponding investment in road safety, in better signage, in pedestrian underpasses, or in sufficient traffic police personnel to enforce the rules of the road. They offered condolences then, but offer only excuses now."

AAP is demanding a full and transparent inquiry into Saturday's accident, not simply to assign blame, but to identify the underlying systemic issues. The party is calling for a comprehensive audit of road infrastructure across Delhi, with a particular focus on identifying and rectifying dangerous junctions, poorly lit stretches of road, and inadequate pedestrian crossings. They are also proposing a significant increase in funding for traffic enforcement, including the deployment of more traffic police officers and the implementation of automated traffic monitoring systems.

Beyond infrastructure and enforcement, AAP is also advocating for a public awareness campaign focused on responsible road usage, highlighting the dangers of speeding and reckless driving. They suggest partnerships with NGOs and schools to educate citizens on road safety best practices.

"We need a holistic approach to road safety," explained AAP MLA Atishi Marlena in a separate statement. "It's not just about punishing offenders; it's about creating a safe environment for all road users - pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers. This requires a long-term commitment and a substantial investment of resources."

The BJP has yet to issue a formal response to AAP's accusations. However, sources within the party indicate they are preparing a statement defending their record on road safety and highlighting ongoing infrastructure projects. Political analysts predict this will likely devolve into a partisan back-and-forth, diverting attention from the core issue of improving road safety for Delhi's citizens. The families of the victims are requesting privacy at this time. The Delhi Traffic Police have confirmed the accident and stated that a preliminary investigation is underway, but have not yet released any findings.
