Colorado High Schoolers Develop Leadership Skills at YMCA Youth in Government Conference

Colorado Students Gain Leadership Experience through YMCA Youth in Government Conference
Every year, the YMCA of Metro Denver hosts the Youth in Government (YIG) conference, a unique opportunity for high school students from across Colorado to learn about the state's government and civic engagement. The conference, now in its 30th year, brings together students from diverse backgrounds to participate in a mock government experience, developing leadership skills, and fostering a deeper understanding of the democratic process.
During the conference, students take on roles such as legislators, governors, and mayors, working together to propose, debate, and vote on bills that address real-world issues affecting Colorado. This hands-on approach allows participants to apply theoretical knowledge of government and politics to practical problems, promoting critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication.
The 2022 YIG conference saw over 200 students from 20 different schools across Colorado come together to engage in the simulated government experience. Participants were divided into small groups, each tasked with addressing specific challenges facing the state, such as education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Through lively debates and negotiations, students developed and refined their bills, often finding creative solutions to complex problems.
One of the key goals of the YIG conference is to empower students to become active citizens and future leaders. By immersing themselves in the democratic process, participants gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and challenges of governance. As one student noted, "I never realized how difficult it was to pass a bill. You have to consider so many different perspectives and find common ground."
The conference also provides a platform for students to develop essential skills, such as public speaking, teamwork, and problem-solving. According to a YMCA spokesperson, "The YIG conference is an incredible opportunity for students to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and make a positive impact on their communities."
In addition to the conference itself, the YMCA of Metro Denver offers a range of resources and support to help students prepare for and follow up on their YIG experience. This includes online tutorials, mentorship programs, and opportunities for students to connect with local government officials and community leaders.
The impact of the YIG conference extends beyond the event itself, with many participants going on to become involved in their communities and pursue careers in public service. As one former participant noted, "The YIG conference was a turning point for me. It sparked a passion for politics and civic engagement that has stayed with me to this day."
