The bill would require disclosure by an officeholder, candidate or political committee that used altered media in ads and spends more than $100 on political advertising.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the "Honest Ads Act" with a vote of 217-202, aiming to enhance transparency in political advertisements on digital platforms. This bill, which received support primarily from Democrats, seeks to extend existing transparency rules from television and radio to online platforms, requiring disclosure of who funds political ads. It mandates that platforms like Google and Facebook maintain public files of political ads and their purchasers, and it sets a threshold for disclosure at $500 spent on ads. The legislation also aims to address foreign interference in U.S. elections by requiring platforms to make reasonable efforts to prevent ad purchases by foreign nationals. Despite its passage in the House, the bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where it has been stalled previously.
