  • In response to the Himachal Pradesh High Court's directive to remove unauthorised encroachments on forest land, the state government has formed a sub-cabinet committee to review the issue. Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi and Education Minister Rohit Thakur convened a meeting on Thursday to discuss the various aspects of encroachment on government land.

The Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has initiated a comprehensive review of encroachments on forest land, aiming to address policy challenges and streamline the process of granting forest land for various uses. This move comes in response to the complexities involved in obtaining permissions under the Forest Conservation Act, which often delays development projects. The government is focusing on simplifying the process for granting land for essential infrastructure like roads, schools, and hospitals, while also tackling the issue of illegal encroachments. Additionally, the state is dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters, with significant funds allocated for relief and rehabilitation, and is also looking into revising the state's disaster relief manual to better manage future calamities. The review also encompasses the need for a balanced approach to development and conservation, ensuring that while development is not hindered, the ecological integrity of the forest areas is maintained.
