  • Many of Interior's offices have changed dramatically over time in response to evolving environmental and cultural values.

The U.S. Secretary of the Interior oversees the Department of the Interior, which manages America's vast natural resources, wildlife, and cultural heritage. This role involves administering over 500 million acres of public lands, including national parks, wildlife refuges, and offshore energy resources. The Secretary is responsible for policies related to Native American affairs, water management, and conservation efforts. Key duties include balancing the use of natural resources for economic benefits like mining, drilling, and recreation, while also ensuring environmental protection and preservation. The position also involves significant interaction with Congress, other federal agencies, and various stakeholders to address issues like climate change, land use, and the rights of indigenous peoples. The current Secretary, Deb Haaland, is notable for being the first Native American to hold this office, bringing a unique perspective to these responsibilities.
