  • The UCC is a common civil code or common law for every citizen in India, irrespective of religion and caste. The code is mentioned under Article 44 of the Constitution as a Directive Principle of State Policy.

The Gujarat government has established a committee tasked with drafting guidelines for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). This move follows Uttarakhand's lead in becoming the first state to pass a UCC bill. The committee, headed by retired Justice KS Zaveri, includes members from various sectors such as law, social work, and academia. Their objective is to create a framework that will standardize laws related to marriage, divorce, property, and inheritance for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. This initiative reflects the BJP's long-standing promise to implement a UCC, aiming to promote gender equality and secularism by unifying personal laws across different religious communities. The committee is expected to submit its report within six months.
