The Zimbabwe High Court has made a landmark ruling by striking down sections of the country's abortion laws, which were deemed unconstitutional. Previously, Zimbabwe's Termination of Pregnancy Act only allowed abortions under very limited circumstances, such as when the pregnancy endangered the woman's life or resulted from rape or incest. The court's decision now broadens the scope, allowing for abortions in cases where continuing the pregnancy would cause severe mental or physical harm to the woman. This ruling was spurred by a lawsuit from a woman who was denied an abortion despite her fetus having a severe medical condition. The judgment is seen as a significant step towards recognizing women's reproductive rights in Zimbabwe, aligning the country more closely with international human rights standards. However, the decision has sparked a debate, with some religious and conservative groups expressing opposition, fearing it might lead to more liberal abortion practices.
