China 'discriminating' against European medical devices in tenders: EU
- The EU accused China on Tuesday of discriminating against European medical device producers in public contracts and warned of "decisive action" unless the issue can be resolved through dialogue with Beijing.
The European Union has accused China of unfairly favoring local medical device manufacturers in its procurement processes, thereby discriminating against European companies. According to the European Commission, China's practices include setting up criteria in tenders that are difficult for foreign companies to meet, such as requiring specific certifications or local partnerships. This has led to a significant disadvantage for European medical device firms in accessing the Chinese market, prompting the EU to consider retaliatory measures if the situation does not improve. The EU is particularly concerned about the lack of transparency and the potential violation of the World Trade Organization's principles of non-discrimination and national treatment.
