Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday his government will take the "strongest action possible" if Russia has harmed an Australian who was taken prisoner while fighting for Ukraine.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has demanded that Russia provide an explanation regarding the fate of an Australian citizen, Alexander (Sasha) Trufanov, who was taken prisoner by Russian forces in Ukraine. Trufanov, a 39-year-old from Perth, was captured in August 2022 while volunteering with the Ukrainian forces. His family has not received any communication from him since June 2023, and there are concerns about his well-being. Albanese emphasized the need for Russia to adhere to international humanitarian law, which requires the humane treatment of prisoners of war. The Australian government has been actively seeking information about Trufanov's condition and location, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong also expressing concern and calling for Russia to fulfill its obligations under international law.
