Social Security Fairness Act brings retirement changes for nearly 3 million public pensioners
- President Joe Biden on Sunday signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law, clearing the way for nearly 3 million public workers including teachers, firefighters and police to see an increase to their Social Security benefits.
The Social Security Fairness Act, which has garnered significant bipartisan support in Congress, aims to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions currently reduce or eliminate Social Security benefits for approximately 2.8 million public sector workers, including teachers, police officers, and firefighters, who also receive pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security. The Act, if passed, would restore full Social Security benefits to these workers, addressing what many see as an unfair penalty. The legislation has been reintroduced with strong backing, evidenced by 305 cosponsors in the House and 52 in the Senate, reflecting a broad consensus on the need for reform. This change would particularly benefit those who have worked in both Social Security-covered and non-covered employment, ensuring they receive the benefits they've earned.
