A compromise but no consensus on Virginia solar bill

After backing away from proposals that the state take over approving or denying large solar projects, legislators will consider a proposed state board to review proposals and recommend local action.
The Virginia General Assembly is currently addressing the contentious issue of solar farm siting through various legislative proposals. Del. Tony Wilt has introduced a bill that would allow local governments to regulate the location of solar projects, potentially giving them veto power over such developments. This move comes in response to concerns from rural communities about the impact of solar farms on farmland and local aesthetics. Conversely, there are efforts to streamline solar project approvals, with Sen. Scott Surovell proposing a bill to expedite the permitting process for solar facilities. Additionally, Sen. Creigh Deeds has put forward legislation to limit the size of solar farms on prime agricultural land, aiming to balance renewable energy development with agricultural preservation. These bills reflect the ongoing debate between promoting renewable energy and protecting local land use and community interests.
