Jordan and Syria to combat arms and drugs smuggling, Islamic State's resurgence
- Jordan and Syria have agreed to form a joint security committee to secure their border, combat arms and drug smuggling and work to prevent the resurgence of Islamic State militants, the Jordanian foreign minister said on Tuesday.
The article discusses a collaborative effort between Jordan and Syria to address the smuggling of arms and drugs, as well as to counter the resurgence of the Islamic State (IS). Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad met in Damascus to discuss these issues, highlighting the need for joint action to secure their mutual border. This meeting comes in the context of recent drone attacks on American bases in Jordan, which have been attributed to Iran-backed militias, and an increase in drug trafficking, particularly the amphetamine Captagon, from Syria into Jordan. The talks also reflect a broader regional concern about the stability and security of the Middle East, with both nations expressing a commitment to work together to prevent the re-emergence of IS and to tackle the narcotics trade that has been funding various militant groups.
