  • The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has rejected claims that Nigeria and other member states are involved in sponsoring terrorism. In a statement issued on Thursday, ECOWAS expressed its support for Nigeria's peacekeeping initiatives and condemned the allegations as unfounded.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly refuted allegations made by the Niger Republic, which suggested that Nigeria was sponsoring terrorism. These claims were part of a broader narrative by Niger's military junta, which has been in power since a coup in July 2023, accusing Nigeria of various destabilizing activities. ECOWAS, through its Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, dismissed these accusations as baseless and an attempt to deflect attention from the junta's own issues. Musah emphasized that such claims are not only unfounded but also detrimental to regional peace and cooperation. He highlighted that Nigeria has been a key player in fighting terrorism within the region, notably through its leadership in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF). This response from ECOWAS comes amidst ongoing tensions and efforts to restore democratic governance in Niger, with the organization advocating for dialogue and peaceful resolution.
