  • Last night, the Senate passed our Social Security Fairness Act. This means teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public servants in AZ will get the Social Security benefits they earned - a clear win for families across our state.

The Senate has advanced the Social Security Fairness Act, a bill aimed at repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions currently reduce or eliminate Social Security benefits for many public sector workers, such as teachers, police officers, and firefighters, who also receive pensions from non-Social Security covered employment. The bill, which has garnered bipartisan support, seeks to ensure that these workers receive their full Social Security benefits without the offsets. The advancement of this legislation marks a significant step towards addressing long-standing inequities in the Social Security system, with advocates arguing that it will provide much-needed financial relief to retirees who have contributed to both Social Security and public pension systems. The bill now moves closer to a full Senate vote, with hopes of eventual passage into law.
