Singh, who served as India's finance minister before becoming Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was instrumental in dismantling the License Raj, a system of extensive government regulation and control over the economy. His reforms opened up the Indian economy to global markets, significantly reducing tariffs and fostering foreign investment, which set the stage for India's economic growth. Despite his economic achievements, his tenure as Prime Minister was also marked by controversies, including corruption scandals that affected his party's image.
