Manmohan Singh instituted a string of social protection schemes that boosted rural wages and bolstered marginalised communities

Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India known for his pivotal role in liberalizing the Indian economy, passed away at the age of 92. Singh, who served as the Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in the early 1990s, was instrumental in initiating economic reforms that opened up India's markets, reduced bureaucratic red tape, and encouraged foreign investment, fundamentally transforming India's economic landscape. His policies are credited with setting the stage for India's economic boom. Singh later became Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, during which he continued to influence economic policy, although his tenure was also marked by controversies including corruption scandals. His death marks the end of an era for economic reform in India, leaving behind a legacy of significant economic transformation and a mixed political record.
