  • The European Union is prepared to end the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, which will not affect the energy security of the EU, according to the European Commission, as quoted by the Ukrinform agency.

The European Union is prepared for the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, as announced by the Ukrainian gas operator, GTSOU, which will not extend its contract with Gazprom beyond December 31, 2024. This decision comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The EU has been reducing its dependency on Russian gas, with imports dropping significantly since the conflict began. Countries like Germany have diversified their energy sources, with LNG imports from the U.S. and Qatar now playing a crucial role. Despite this, some Eastern European countries still rely on Russian gas, but the EU has been actively working on alternative supply routes and increasing its own gas production to mitigate any potential disruptions. The EU's energy commissioner, Kadri Simson, emphasized that the EU is ready for this change, having taken steps to ensure energy security through diversification and increased storage levels.
