  • Work and Pension Secretary Liz Kendall announced that women born in the 1950s will not be given any sort of financial payout.

The Labour government has been accused of betrayal by campaigners after it rejected calls to compensate women affected by changes to the state pension age. The Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) group, representing around 3.8 million women born in the 1950s, had their pension age increased from 60 to 65, and then to 66, with many claiming they were not adequately informed. Despite a report from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman suggesting compensation, Labour's Work and Pensions Secretary, Liz Kendall, stated that the government would not commit to compensation, citing the need to prioritize economic stability and public finances. This decision has led to accusations of broken promises, as Labour had previously supported compensation during their time in opposition. The WASPI campaigners argue that the government's refusal to act is a significant injustice, leaving many women in financial hardship.
