Why are the Houthis attacking Israel - and can they be deterred?
- The Houthis may think they can get away with anything without paying a price. The question is, what price is enough to make them stop?
The Houthi rebels, officially known as Ansar Allah, have escalated their military actions by attacking Israel in solidarity with Hamas, amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. These attacks, which include drone and missile strikes, are part of a broader regional tension involving Iran, which supports both the Houthis and Hamas. The Houthis, who control significant parts of Yemen including the capital Sanaa, have been in conflict with a Saudi-led coalition since 2015, aiming to restore Yemen's internationally recognized government. Their recent actions against Israel are seen as an extension of their resistance against what they perceive as aggression from Israel and its allies. Deterring the Houthis presents multiple challenges: their resilience against previous military campaigns, their strategic location near key shipping lanes, and their ideological commitment to the Palestinian cause. Efforts to stop their attacks might involve diplomatic negotiations, increased military pressure, or addressing the root causes of the Yemen conflict, but any solution would need to consider the complex web of regional politics and alliances.
