Denmark frees anti-whaling activist Paul Watson and refuses Japan extradition request
- Anti-whaling activists and protesters have argued that the arrest warrant against Watson is part of a politically motivated effort to sanitise Japan's whaling practices, which the Japanese government claims are sustainable and focused on scientific research.
Paul Watson, a prominent anti-whaling activist and founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was released by Danish authorities after they rejected an extradition request from Japan. Watson had been detained in Frankfurt, Germany, on a 2012 Interpol red notice issued by Japan, where he is wanted for allegedly endangering the lives of Japanese fishermen during his protests against whaling in the Southern Ocean. The Danish court's decision was based on the assessment that the incident in question was not considered a crime in Denmark, and thus, extradition was not justified. Watson, who has been involved in numerous confrontations with whaling fleets, expressed relief at the decision, emphasizing his commitment to continue his activism against whaling and other forms of marine exploitation.
