Government injects $180m to boost 'vital' local news
- A major federal funding initiative is designed to bolster public-interest journalism, with support for newswire AAP, local outlets and Indigenous media.
The Australian government has announced an investment of $180 million over three years to support local journalism, aiming to enhance the production of public interest journalism. This initiative, part of the Revive National Cultural Policy, includes $90 million for the continuation of the Public Interest News Gathering (PING) program, which provides grants to media companies to produce news content. Additionally, $6 million is allocated for the Regional and Small Publishers Innovation Fund to aid smaller publishers in innovation and sustainability. The funding also extends to $11.2 million for community radio, $1.8 million for Pacific media, and $1 million for the National Gallery of Australia's media program. This financial support is intended to ensure that Australians have access to reliable, local news, thereby fostering a well-informed community and supporting the democratic process.
