Former longtime South Carolina congressman John Spratt dies at 82

John Spratt, a former U.S. Representative from South Carolina, passed away at the age of 82. Spratt served in Congress for 28 years, representing the 5th Congressional District from 1983 to 2011. Known for his work on the House Budget Committee, he was the chairman from 2007 to 2011. His tenure was marked by his efforts to promote fiscal responsibility and his advocacy for veterans' issues. Spratt was remembered by colleagues for his integrity, intelligence, and dedication to public service. He lost his seat in the 2010 election to Republican Mick Mulvaney during a wave of anti-incumbent sentiment. His death was confirmed by his family, and he is survived by his wife, Janie, and their three children.
