Talks on M23 crisis stalled as Rwanda, DR Congo Presidents cancel meeting

The planned meeting between Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi, aimed at addressing the ongoing M23 crisis, has been canceled. This cancellation has stalled talks on the conflict involving the M23 rebel group, which has been active in eastern Congo. The M23, predominantly Congolese Tutsis, claim to defend their community against ethnic persecution, but their actions have led to significant displacement and violence. The situation has been complicated by mutual accusations of support for insurgent groups; Congo accuses Rwanda of backing M23, while Rwanda alleges that Congo supports the FDLR, a group with genocidal origins. The failure to hold this summit has raised concerns about the escalation of the conflict, with fears that without dialogue, the region might see increased military engagement and further destabilization.
