Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has appointed former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as an adviser for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2024. This move comes as Malaysia prepares to chair ASEAN next year. Thaksin, who has been a significant figure in Thai politics despite being ousted in a 2006 coup and later convicted on corruption charges, returned to Thailand in August after years in self-exile. His appointment aims to leverage his extensive experience in regional politics to enhance ASEAN's role and effectiveness. Thaksin's role will be informal, focusing on providing insights and advice rather than holding an official position within the ASEAN framework.
