Russian Lawmakers Expand Criteria for 'Terrorists and Extremists' Registry

Russian lawmakers on Thursday passed a bill that expands the grounds for adding individuals to the "terrorists and extremists" registry maintained by state financial watchdog Rosfinmonitoring. Current law allows the authorities to include individuals accused in criminal cases of extremist and terrorist activities.

The Russian State Duma has recently passed legislation that expands the criteria for inclusion on the country's registry of terrorists and extremists. This new law allows for the addition of individuals who have been convicted of disseminating "deliberately false information" about the Russian military, as well as those who publicly incite "extremist activities" or call for actions that could jeopardize state security. Previously, the registry was primarily for those involved in terrorism or extremism. This expansion comes amidst Russia's ongoing efforts to control narratives around its military actions, particularly in Ukraine, and reflects a broader clampdown on dissent and freedom of speech. The legislation has raised concerns about further erosion of civil liberties in Russia.
