Trudeau noncommittal on expanding rebate beyond 'working Canadians'

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not committed to expanding the federal grocery rebate beyond working Canadians, despite calls from opposition parties to include those on social assistance. During a press conference in Winnipeg, Trudeau emphasized that the rebate, which was introduced to help offset rising food costs, targets low-income Canadians who are working. He highlighted that the government has already implemented various supports for vulnerable populations, including increasing the GST rebate, providing dental care, and offering rental supplements. However, he did not rule out future adjustments to the program, stating that the government continuously assesses its policies to ensure they meet the needs of Canadians.
