  • Acting Energy Secretary Gillian Martin said hydrogen is one of Scotland's 'greatest industrial opportunities since oil and gas'.

The Scottish Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to position Scotland as a leading producer of hydrogen, aiming to leverage the country's natural resources and existing infrastructure to drive economic growth and achieve net zero emissions. The strategy includes a £100 million investment in the development of hydrogen technology, focusing on both green hydrogen (produced using renewable energy) and blue hydrogen (produced from natural gas with carbon capture). Key initiatives involve establishing hydrogen hubs, supporting innovation through research and development, and fostering partnerships between public and private sectors. The plan also outlines the potential for job creation, with estimates suggesting up to 300,000 jobs could be supported by the hydrogen economy by 2045. Additionally, the strategy emphasizes the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing sectors like transport, heating, and industry, aligning with Scotland's broader environmental goals.
