Republican rappers Kneecap win High Court battle for UK government grant - Kemi Badenoch refusal of money "unlawful"
- Controversial rappers Kneecap have won a fight for UK government cash they were refused by Kemi Badenoch. At the High Court in Belfast this morning, the government's own lawyers conceded the case, accepting Mrs Badenoch acted unlawfully in refusing a
- 14,250 grant Kneecap applied for last year.
The High Court has ruled that the decision by Kemi Badenoch, the Business and Trade Secretary, to block a £15,000 grant to the Northern Irish rap group Kneecap was unlawful. Kneecap, known for their republican views and criticism of the UK Government, had applied for funding through the Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS) to support their international tours. The court found that Badenoch's refusal was based on the group's political views, which contravened the funding scheme's rules. The judge, Mr Justice Eyre, stated that the decision was "irrational" and "motivated by improper considerations," specifically targeting the group's political stance. This ruling marks a significant legal victory for Kneecap, affirming that public funding decisions should not be influenced by an applicant's political beliefs.
