The think tank is laying off nearly all of its staff, as its former board sues to stop what it calls a "takeover" by the Trump administration.

The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) has laid off its entire staff, escalating a legal battle with the Trump administration over funding and operational control. The layoffs come after the administration attempted to defund the institute, arguing that its mission overlaps with other government agencies. USIP, established by Congress in 1984 to promote peace and prevent conflict, contends that the move is politically motivated and violates its independence. The institute has filed a lawsuit against the administration, claiming that the defunding efforts infringe on its statutory mandate. This situation has raised concerns among international peace advocates and former diplomats about the future of U.S. involvement in global peacebuilding efforts.
