  • The Western Cape Government has urged the National Department of Human Settlements to reverse R300 million in funding cuts, warning that the cuts will jeopardise essential housing projects and threaten the welfare of thousands in need.

The Western Cape government has demanded the reversal of a R300 million funding cut by the National Treasury, which was announced in a letter dated 15 September 2023. This cut affects the province's conditional grants, specifically impacting the Human Settlements Development Grant (HSDG) and the Informal Settlements Upgrading Partnership Grant (ISUPG). The reduction in funding will lead to the cancellation of 1,280 housing units and the inability to upgrade 1,500 informal settlements, significantly affecting the province's ability to provide housing and services to its residents. Western Cape Finance and Economic Opportunities MEC, Mireille Wenger, criticized the decision as "irrational" and highlighted that it would exacerbate the housing backlog and hinder service delivery. The province has requested an urgent meeting with the National Treasury to discuss the reversal of these cuts.
