  • House Republicans are hoping to vote Tuesday on a stopgap bill aimed at funding the federal government through September 30 and preventing a shutdown after Friday.

The House GOP has passed a bill to fund the government through October 31, 2023, aiming to avoid a government shutdown by extending funding at current levels. This bill, known as the "Continuing Appropriations and Border Security Enhancement Act," includes significant border security enhancements, such as resuming construction of the border wall and increasing Border Patrol pay. However, it does not address aid to Ukraine, a point of contention among some Republicans. The bill passed with a vote of 219-213, largely along party lines, and now faces an uncertain future in the Democrat-controlled Senate, where it is expected to meet resistance due to its focus on border security without addressing other Democratic priorities like disaster relief and support for Ukraine. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has already indicated that the Senate will not take up this bill, highlighting the ongoing partisan divide over government funding and policy priorities.
