  • Mike Schmidt, the former Multnomah County district attorney who lost his reelection bid last year to an office insider, started this week as general counsel of the Urban League of Portland, one of Oregon's largest and oldest civil rights organizations. Schmidt confirmed the move Thursday. He began the job Monday.

The Urban League of Portland has appointed former Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt as its new general counsel. Schmidt, who did not seek re-election after his term, will start his new role on January 16, 2025. His appointment comes at a time when the Urban League is focusing on criminal justice reform, housing, and economic development. Schmidt's previous tenure as DA was marked by his efforts to reform the criminal justice system, including changes in prosecutorial practices and advocating for alternatives to incarceration. His experience is expected to significantly contribute to the Urban League's initiatives aimed at addressing systemic issues affecting the Black community in Portland.
