Govt Bans Sale and Use of Drugs Approved by Indian Body
- The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has announced a ban on the trade, distribution and sale of pharmaceutical products referenced to the Indian Pharmacopeia (IP) in Kenya. India Pharmacopeia is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the Government of India.
The Indian government has imposed a ban on the sale and use of 14 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs, which were previously approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO). This decision was made following recommendations from an expert committee that found no therapeutic justification for these combinations and highlighted potential health risks associated with their use. The banned drugs include combinations like Nimesulide with Paracetamol, Chlorpheniramine Maleate with Codeine, and others, which are commonly used for treating conditions like cough, fever, and infections. The ban was enacted under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, aiming to safeguard public health by removing these potentially harmful and unnecessary medications from the market. This move has sparked discussions on the regulation of pharmaceuticals in India, emphasizing the need for stringent evaluation of drug combinations before they are approved for public use.
