Live: Israeli government approves Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal
- Israel's cabinet voted on Saturday to approve a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said. The first stage of the truce is set to begin this weekend bringing a halt to fighting and bombardment in Gaza's deadliest-ever war.
The Israeli government has approved a ceasefire deal with Hamas, which includes the release of hostages. This agreement, mediated by Qatar, involves a four-day pause in fighting to facilitate the release of 50 hostages, primarily women and children, from Gaza. In exchange, Israel will release 150 Palestinian prisoners, also women and children. The ceasefire aims to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, with the possibility of extending the truce if more hostages are freed. This development comes after weeks of intense conflict, with significant casualties reported on both sides. The deal has been met with mixed reactions, with some seeing it as a step towards peace, while others, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have vowed to continue the fight against Hamas post-ceasefire.
