Seven months after BJP comes to power, Odisha joins Ayushman Bharat scheme
- Odisha has joined the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the state's people and criticized the previous government for not adopting the scheme.
Seven months after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumed power in Odisha, the state has decided to join the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), a national health insurance scheme aimed at providing free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. This decision was announced by Odisha's Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling, marking a significant policy shift as the previous Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government had not implemented the scheme, opting instead for its own health program, the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY). The integration of AB-PMJAY is expected to benefit approximately 96 lakh families in Odisha, enhancing their access to healthcare services across the country. The move aligns with BJP's national agenda to expand the reach of this flagship health initiative, which has already seen over 5.5 crore hospital admissions nationwide since its inception.
