  • The former leader of the Proud Boys -- a group prosecutors say was central to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 -- is asking President-elect Donald Trump for a pardon, according to a letter from his lawyer on Monday.

Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys, has publicly requested that former President Donald Trump provide financial assistance for his legal defense. Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, made this plea through his attorney, stating that Trump had previously promised to cover legal fees for those involved in the events of that day. Despite this promise, Tarrio has not received any financial support from Trump. His attorney emphasized the need for funds to appeal his conviction, highlighting the disparity between Trump's assurances and the lack of actual support. This request comes amidst ongoing legal battles for many involved in the Capitol riot, with Tarrio's case being one of the most high-profile due to his leadership role in the Proud Boys.
