Russia's security must be guaranteed by any Ukraine peace deal, Lavrov says
- Russia sees no point in a weak ceasefire to freeze the war in Ukraine but Moscow wants a legally binding deal for a lasting peace that would ensure the security of both Russia and its neighbours, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that any peace agreement to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine must include guarantees for Russia's security. Speaking at a press conference in Minsk, Lavrov emphasized that Russia's security concerns are non-negotiable and must be addressed in any potential peace deal. He criticized Western countries for what he perceives as their failure to acknowledge Russia's legitimate security interests, particularly in light of NATO's eastward expansion. Lavrov's comments come amidst ongoing discussions and negotiations aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the war, highlighting the complexity of achieving a lasting peace that satisfies all parties involved.
