South Korea's National Assembly voted Thursday to impeach the national police chief and the justice minister over their enforcement of martial law last week. The opposition-controlled assembly plans to submit a second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol later in the day after the first motion last Saturday

The South Korean parliament has impeached the police chief, Yoon Hee-keun, and Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon over allegations related to a martial law plan during the 2017 impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye. The opposition-led National Assembly voted to suspend both officials, accusing them of involvement in a scheme to impose martial law to suppress the massive protests that led to Park's ouster. The impeachment motion, which passed with a vote of 178 to 116, was initiated by the Democratic Party, which holds a majority in the Assembly. The officials are accused of conspiring with military leaders to deploy troops and tanks to control the situation, a plan that was allegedly discussed but never implemented. The case will now move to the Constitutional Court, which will decide whether to uphold or overturn the impeachment. If upheld, both officials would be permanently removed from their positions.
