Federal judge shields 2,200 USAID employees from being put on leave
A federal judge on Friday issued a limited order shielding 2,200 U.S. Agency for International Development employees from being placed on leave or abruptly relocated but stopped short of blocking the Trump administration's broader overhaul of the agency.
A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order preventing the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) from placing approximately 2,200 employees on administrative leave. This decision came after a lawsuit was filed by the employees, represented by the American Federation of Government Employees, challenging USAID's plan to furlough staff due to budgetary constraints. The order, issued by Judge Richard J. Leon, halts the implementation of the leave policy until at least July 12, 2023, when a preliminary injunction hearing is scheduled. The employees argued that the furlough would cause irreparable harm, including financial distress and disruption to their careers and the agency's operations. USAID had planned these furloughs to manage a shortfall in its operating budget, but the judge's ruling provides a temporary reprieve for the affected workers.
