UN's Syria envoy calls for 'bold moves' from new government

  • The United Nations' special envoy for Syria said on Friday that now is the time for a "genuine, credible and inclusive transitional government" after noting the constitutional declaration issued by the caretaker authorities.

The UN's Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has called for "bold moves" from the newly formed Syrian government to address the ongoing crisis in the country. Speaking at a press conference in Damascus, Pedersen emphasized the need for a political solution to end the conflict, which has lasted over a decade. He highlighted the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which outlines a roadmap for peace including a ceasefire, political transition, and elections. Pedersen also stressed the necessity of engaging with all parties involved, including the Syrian government, opposition groups, and international stakeholders, to make progress towards peace and stability. He expressed hope that the new government would show willingness to engage in constructive dialogue and take decisive steps towards reconciliation and recovery.
