  • By Bo Erickson, Richard Cowan and Katharine Jackson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson was reelected to the chamber's top job on Friday in a lengthy vote that highlighted persistent divisions among Donald Trump's Republicans on Capitol Hill.

Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, was elected as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2023, ending a three-week period of paralysis within the House following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy. Johnson, a lesser-known figure in national politics, secured the position after several other candidates failed to garner enough support. His election came after a tumultuous period where the GOP struggled to unite behind a leader, with previous nominees like Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan unable to clinch the necessary votes. Johnson, who has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump, particularly during Trump's efforts to contest the 2020 election results, was able to unify the party, receiving 220 votes against 209 for the Democratic nominee, Hakeem Jeffries. His ascent to Speaker marks a significant moment for the GOP, showcasing their ability to rally behind a more conservative, Trump-aligned figure amidst internal divisions.
