Several new members of Congress will make LGBTQ history
- Three history-making, newly elected lawmakers representing the LGBTQ community will be sworn in to the 119th Congress Friday.
The 119th Congress will see a historic number of openly LGBTQ legislators sworn in, marking a significant moment for representation in U.S. politics. This group includes 13 members, with notable figures like Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), who is the first openly gay immigrant elected to Congress, and Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), the first woman and openly LGBTQ person to represent Vermont in Congress. Additionally, Rep. Eric Sorensen (D-IL) becomes the first openly gay person to represent Illinois in Congress, and Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH) is the first openly gay member of Congress from New Hampshire. This increase in diversity reflects a broader acceptance and push for inclusivity within the political sphere, highlighting the evolving landscape of American politics where representation of marginalized communities is becoming more prominent.
